Stockwell station has reopened following a fire alert earlier today, though significant disruption remains across the Northern Line, according to Southwark News.

Emergency services were called at 10:39am on Thursday 8 October after smoke was seen on one of the platforms at the station, which serves both the Northern and Victoria lines.

Key points

  • Evacuation — the station was cleared as a safety measure while crews responded.
  • Reopening — Transport for London confirmed the station was back in use by 12:49pm.
  • Ongoing issues — no trains are running on the Bank branch between Camden Town and Morden, with severe delays elsewhere on the line.
  • Ticket acceptance — fares are being accepted on several other services, including London Buses and Thameslink.

Firefighters from Lambeth, Clapham and Brixton stations attended the scene. A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said crews were searching the station to find what caused the smoke.

"Crews are carrying out a systematic search of the station to identify the source of the smoke, and the station has been evacuated as a precaution,"
the spokesperson said.

Although the station is now open, there is still no service on the Bank branch between Camden Town and Morden. The rest of the Northern Line is experiencing severe delays. To help passengers, tickets are being accepted on London Buses, Thameslink, Great Northern, South Western Railway and London Trams.

What it means in practice

If you rely on the Northern Line today, especially the Bank branch, your journey may take much longer. The shutdown between Camden Town and Morden means you will need to find another route. Allow extra time and consider the alternatives where your ticket is valid.

  • Check before you travel — use TfL's live status updates to see if the line has reopened.
  • Know your alternatives — buses, Thameslink, Great Northern, South Western Railway and London Trams are accepting tickets.
  • Plan for delays — even after the station reopens, severe delays can persist, so budget more time for your trip.
