Wales has raised the floor price for alcohol, with the minimum unit price (MUP) going up to 65p from today, according to the Welsh Government. The change matches the rate already used in Scotland.

Key points

  • New price — the minimum unit price for alcohol in Wales is now 65p.
  • Expected impact — ministers say the change could prevent over 900 alcohol-related deaths and help nearly 5,000 people cut down over 20 years.
  • Guidance issued — shops, Trading Standards and support services have been given fresh guidance before the change took effect.
  • Evidence base — a review found the old 50p rate had been eroded by inflation, leaving it worth 39p in 2020 prices.

The Welsh Government says the policy is one of several measures intended to reduce inequality and improve health. It points to more than £68 million of investment to support people affected by alcohol and drug use, with over £41 million going directly to local services.

Deputy Minister for Public and Preventative Health Nerys Evans said the change was about protecting people, not punishing those who drink sensibly. She said:

"Every one of the hundreds of lives this change could save is someone's parent, partner or child. That's why this matters."
She added that inflation had made the previous 50p rate less effective, and that raising it to 65p was intended to keep high-strength low-cost alcohol off the shelves.

Andrew Misell, Director for Wales at the charity Alcohol Change UK, said the policy targets the strongest and cheapest drinks. He said:

"This new 65p minimum unit price will keep big bottles of super-strength cider off the shelves, and also make it more difficult for supermarkets to offer bulk discounts."
He added that the change should not push up the price of a pint in pubs.

What it means in practice

The immediate effect is on the price you pay for cheap, strong alcohol in shops and supermarkets. Drinks that were sold below the new floor will become more expensive, while pub prices are expected to stay largely the same.

  • Check your usual buys — some large bottles of cider, value spirits and multipack deals will cost more than before.
  • Support is available — local services funded by the Welsh Government can help if you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol.
  • Watch for further changes — the rate is reviewed over time, so the 65p figure may be adjusted again in future.
